Thirteen Pictures/Posters I Can See From My Desk

Thirteen Things about Chloe Devlin
13 Pictures/Posters I Can See From My Desk -- okay I'm stretching it here, but I wasn't into topics like books I've read or concerts I've attended.

1.... poster of Dragstrip Girl - a biker movie from the 50's

2... poster of Dragstrip Riot - another biker movie from the 50's

3... poster of Ace in the Hole - a Billy Wilder film starring Kirk Douglas

4... poster of Hoosiers - one of the all-time best sports movies, starring Gene Hackman. The best thing is this poster is in Japanese. Written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh.

5... poster of Rudy - another fabulous sports movie, starring Sean Astin. This poster is also in Japanese. And this movie was also written by Angelo Pizzo and directed by David Anspaugh.

6... poster of Gone with the Wind - classic movie starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. The poster is huge and in French. Really cool!

7... photo of Ocean's Eleven - the original with Frank Sinatra as Danny Ocean

8... photo of Ocean's Eleven - the remake with George Clooney as Danny Ocean

9... poster of Pacific Blue - cops on bikes at the beach -- what more could you want?

10... pic of my family - circa 1994 when we were on a cruise

11... stereogram pic -- one of those where you need to relax your focus until you can see the hidden pic

12... family pic from my sister's wedding -- all of us including cousins

13... pic from Cabo San Lucas -- one of those they paint on the street where they use everyday objects like pot lids to create the designs, then spray paint on the paper. This one has a pyramid with two planets (one looks like Saturn) looming over it

Tribute to George Carlin and the Seven Dirty Words You Can't Say on Television

Comedian George Carlin died this past weekend. Listening to his "Seven Dirty Words You Can't Say on Television" routine was a defining moment for me. It gave me the knowledge that while there were words you didn't usually say in public, especially in polite company, you weren't going to hell if you did use them. But his routine also taught me the importance of understanding the words you were using.

By learning how to use words properly, it becomes easier to remove the stigma from them and embrace them back into our lives. I don't use those seven dirty words on a daily basis. Most of them I have no reason to use. But I know the words, their meanings as well as double meanings, so that when it's appropriate, I can use the proper word – both in spoken language and in my writing.

After I heard his "Seven Dirty Words" routine, I made it a mission to memorize those words in their correct order from his monologue. I was in junior high – at a time when kids are learning vocabulary from their peers, as well as their parents and teachers. And it was something of a novelty that this sweet girl could rattle off those seven words. Including the next couple of lines from his routine.

But I also feel that by learning those words, I didn't desensitize myself to them. Rather, I became more sensitive to nuances in language, wanting to use the exact right word – no matter if it was considered too dirty to say on television or not. And that sensitivity to nuances probably contributed to my having a vocabulary a bit above my grade level. Friends were always asking me what I was saying because they didn't always understand the words I was using.

So I would rephrase, using a slightly less accurate word, but one that was easier for them to understand. And I knew, deep in my heart, that my vocabulary was something to be proud of, to use to the fullest extent. And ultimately that meant using George Carlin's "Seven Dirty Words You Can't Say on Television."

So, George, here's to you! Thanks for the vocab lesson!

So all together now -- Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker and tits. And tits shouldn't even be there!

Songs from Beauty and the Beast

Thirteen Things about Chloe Devlin
I'm such a TT slacker. But it's still Thursday here in L.A., so here's 13 songs (with sample lyrics) from Beauty and the Beast, one of my favorite musicals.

1. "Belle" - Belle, Gaston, Lefou, Silly Girls, Townspeople

Belle: Oh, isn't this amazing?
It's my fav'rite part because --- you'll see
Here's where she meets Prince Charming
But she won't discover that it's him 'til chapter three!

2. "No Matter What" - Maurice, Belle

Maurice: In all you say or do
You couldn't make it plainer
You are your mother's daughter;
therefore you are class

3. "Me" - Gaston, Belle

Gaston:So Belle, what would it be?
Is it "yes", or is it "oh, yes"?
Belle:I...I just don't deserve you!
Gaston:Who does?
ME!

4. "Home" - Belle

Belle: Build higher walls around me
Change ev'ry lock and key
Nothing lasts, nothing holds
All of me
My heart's far, far away
Home and free!

5. "Gaston" - Lefou, Gaston, Silly Girls, Tavern Patrons

Bimbettes: For there's no one as burly and brawny
Gaston: As you see I've got biceps to spare
LeFou: Not a bit of him's scraggly or scrawny
Gaston: That's right!
And ev'ry last inch of me's covered with hair

6. "How Long Must This Go On?" - Beast

Beast: Is there no one
Who can show me
How to win the world's forgiveness?

7. "Be Our Guest" - Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, Cogsworth, Madame de la Grande Bouche, Chip, Babette, Enchanted Objects

Lumiere: Be our guest! Be our guest!
Put our service to the test
Tie your napkin 'round your neck, cherie
And we'll provide the rest

8. "If I Can't Love Her" - Beast

Beast: No pain could be deeper
No life could be cheaper
No point anymore, if I can't love her
No spirit could win me
No hope left within me
Hope I could have loved her and that she'd set me free
But it's not to be
If I can't love her
Let the world be done with me.

9. "Something There" - Belle, Beast, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, Cogsworth

Belle: You never learn to read?
Beast: Only a little, and long ago
Belle: Well, it just so happens that this is the perfect book to read aloud. Come here, sit by me

10. "Human Again" - Lumiere, Madame de la Grande Bouche, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Babette, Chip, Enchanted Objects

Lumiere: I'll be cooking again
Be good-looking again
With a mademoiselle on each arm

11. "Maison des Lunes" - Gaston, Lefou, Monsieur D'Arque

D'Arque: I'll be strapping up an inmate
LeFou: Very tightly
Gaston: Very soon
D'Arque: But please don't bring him late
Our check-in time's noon!

12. "Beauty and the Beast" - Mrs. Potts

Mrs. Potts: Tale as old as time
True as it can be
Barely even friends
Then somebody bends
Unexpectedly.

13. "The Mob Song" - Gaston, Lefou, Monsieur D'Arque, Townspeople

Mob: We don't like
What we don't understand
In fact it scares us

Bonus Song:
14. "Transformation" - Belle, Beast

Belle: Don't you know how you've changed me
Strange how I fin'lly see
I found home
You're my home
Stay with me

Belle: No! No, please!
Don't leave me!
I love you.
